How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Carpet: 7 Methods That Actually Work
SHARE:
To remove red wine stains from carpet, act fast: blot up as much liquid as possible, then treat the spot with a DIY solution like dish soap and hydrogen peroxide or a commercial stain remover. The faster you work, the better your odds of full removal. This guide covers seven proven methods, including home remedies and store-bought products, so you can tackle the stain no matter what you have on hand.
Why You Need to Take Quick Action on a Red Wine Stain
Red wine contains tannins and natural pigments called anthocyanins that begin bonding to carpet fibers within minutes of contact. The longer you wait, the deeper those pigments penetrate, making red wine stain removal from carpet significantly harder. A stain treated immediately can often come out completely. A red wine stain left on carpet overnight is a different battle entirely.
Here is exactly what to do the moment wine hits the floor:
Grab a clean white cloth or paper towels immediately.
Blot firmly from the outer edge of the stain inward. Never rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the pile.
Keep blotting with a fresh section of cloth until no more wine transfers.
Do not pour water on the stain yet. Diluting before blotting drives the wine further into the backing.
Once you have removed as much liquid as possible, choose one of the treatment methods below.
If you are entertaining and do not have time to treat the stain fully, pour a small amount of cold water over it and blot again. This buys time. A comprehensive spring cleaning plan is great for catching those forgotten stains later, but right now, speed is your most powerful tool.
How to Get Red Wine Out of Carpet with Club Soda
Club soda is a classic first-response remedy, and it works because the carbonation helps lift wine pigment from the fibers before it sets. Getting red wine out of carpet with club soda is most effective within the first 10 to 15 minutes of the spill.
How to use it:
After blotting up the bulk of the wine, pour a small splash of club soda directly onto the stain.
Let it fizz for about 30 seconds.
Blot again with a clean cloth, working from the outside in.
Repeat two or three times until the stain fades.
Rinse with a small amount of cold water and blot dry.
Club soda alone may not fully eliminate a heavy pour, but it is a solid first step before moving to a stronger remedy. It is also safe on most carpet types, including wool and nylon, and leaves no residue that could attract dirt later.
How to Remove Red Wine from Carpet with Dish Soap and White Vinegar
This is one of the most popular red wine carpet home remedies because the ingredients live in almost every kitchen. White vinegar helps break down the wine’s acidity while dish soap cuts through any oily residue. Together, they are surprisingly effective at removing red wine from carpet at home.
What you need:
1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap (clear or white preferred)
1 tablespoon of white vinegar
2 cups of warm water
Steps:
Mix the dish soap, vinegar, and water in a small bowl.
Apply the solution to the stain using a clean cloth, working from the outside edge inward.
Blot repeatedly, using a fresh part of the cloth each time.
Rinse with cold water and blot dry.
If the stain persists, repeat the process once more before it dries.
According to Good Housekeeping, vinegar-based solutions are among the most reliable DIY approaches for protein and pigment stains on fabric surfaces. Just make sure to rinse thoroughly, because leftover vinegar can leave a faint odor.
How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Carpet with Dish Soap and Hydrogen Peroxide
This combination is the heavy hitter of DIY red wine stain removal from carpet. Hydrogen peroxide is a mild oxidizing agent that bleaches out color molecules, while dish soap helps carry the loosened pigment away. It is particularly useful for how to remove red wine stains from carpet without commercial products when the stain is stubborn.
Important caution: hydrogen peroxide can lighten some carpets, particularly dark or vibrant colors. Always test on an inconspicuous area first.
What you need:
1 part liquid dish soap
2 parts hydrogen peroxide (3% concentration, standard drugstore variety)
Steps:
Blot the stain thoroughly first.
Mix the dish soap and hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl.
Apply to the stain and let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes.
Blot with a clean cloth. Do not scrub.
Rinse with cold water and blot until dry.
This method is especially useful the next day on a red wine stain that has had time to dry. The oxidizing action of the peroxide does the work even on set stains, where plain soap and water will not cut it.
How to Get Red Wine Out of Carpet with Baking Soda
Baking soda is a workhorse in the cleaning world, and it earns its reputation here. Removing red wine stains from carpet with baking soda works through absorption: the powder pulls liquid and pigment out of the fibers as it dries. This is one of the most popular home remedies for red wine carpet stains, and for good reason.
How to use baking soda for wine stains:
After blotting up the excess wine, pour a generous layer of baking soda directly over the wet stain.
Let it sit for at least 3 minutes on a fresh spill, or overnight on a set stain.
Once dry, vacuum the powder away.
Follow up with the dish soap and hydrogen peroxide method above if any discoloration remains.
Getting red wine out of carpet with baking soda is also a smart move when you are short on time and cannot fully treat the stain right away. Covering the wet stain with baking soda slows the drying process and reduces how much pigment bonds to the fibers, giving you a better starting point when you return to clean it properly.

How to Use Salt to Remove a Red Wine Stain from Carpet
Salt works on the same principle as baking soda: absorption. It is most effective on a fresh, still-wet spill and is particularly handy when you are in the middle of a dinner party and do not have time to mix a cleaning solution. Using salt to draw wine out of carpet is a centuries-old trick that still holds up.
Steps:
Blot up as much wine as possible first.
Pour a generous amount of table salt or kosher salt over the wet stain.
Let it absorb for at least 5 minutes. You will see the salt turn pink as it pulls the wine out.
Sweep or vacuum the salt away.
Follow up with one of the liquid methods above to address any remaining discoloration.
Salt alone rarely removes a stain completely, but it is an excellent first-response tool when that is all you have within reach. Think of it as triage while you gather your cleaning supplies.

How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Carpet with Stain Removal Products
When home remedies are not cutting it, commercial stain removers designed for carpet are a reliable option. Several products are formulated specifically for red wine and other tannin-based stains, and they can handle both fresh spills and dried red wine stains that have been sitting for hours or days.
Popular and well-reviewed options include:
Wine Away: A dedicated red wine stain remover that uses a citrus-based formula. It is safe for most carpet types and works on both fresh and set stains.
Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover: A water-based formula that does not require rinsing. It is particularly effective at removing dried red wine from carpet.
OxiClean Carpet and Area Rug Stain Remover: Uses oxygen-activated cleaning to break down pigment bonds. A strong choice for stubborn red wine carpet stains next day or beyond.
When using any commercial product, follow these rules:
Always patch-test in a hidden spot first.

Follow the manufacturer’s dwell time instructions before blotting.

Tips for Removing Old Red Wine Stains from Carpet
Dried red wine stains are tougher but not impossible. The key difference between a fresh stain and an old one is that the pigment molecules have fully bonded to the carpet fibers and the moisture has evaporated, leaving a concentrated residue behind. Getting a red wine stain out of carpet the next day, or even a week later, requires a slightly different approach.
Here is what works on set stains:
Re-wet the stain first. Add a small amount of warm water to the dried area and let it sit for a few minutes. Rehydrating the stain makes the pigment easier to lift.
Use hydrogen peroxide and dish soap. This is the single most effective DIY method for removing dried red wine stains. Apply, let it dwell for 20 to 30 minutes, then blot.
Try an enzyme-based cleaner. Enzyme cleaners break down organic matter at a molecular level, making them ideal for old, set-in stains. Look for products labeled for wine, coffee, or pet stains.
Be patient and repeat. Old stains rarely come out in one pass. Plan for two or three rounds of treatment, letting the carpet dry between applications.
Do not use hot water or a steam iron. Heat permanently sets pigment stains into carpet fibers. Always use cold or lukewarm water.
If a stain has been sitting for more than a week and none of the above methods are producing results, a professional carpet cleaning service with hot-water extraction equipment may be your best remaining option. Real Simple’s cleaning resource center notes that professional treatment is often the turning point for stubborn, set-in stains that DIY methods cannot fully resolve.
Other Red Wine Carpet Stain Tips Worth Knowing
Beyond the specific methods above, a few general rules apply to every red wine carpet situation:
Always work from the outside in. This prevents the stain from spreading outward as you treat it.
Cold water only. Hot water sets stains. Use cold or room-temperature water throughout the process.
Blot, never scrub. Scrubbing damages carpet pile and drives pigment deeper into the backing.
Dry thoroughly after treatment. Leftover moisture under the carpet can lead to mold growth. Place a stack of paper towels over the damp area, weight it down with a heavy book, and leave it for several hours. The EPA’s mold guidelines recommend keeping indoor surfaces dry and well-ventilated to prevent mold from taking hold.
Use white cloths only. Colored cloths can transfer dye to the carpet, creating a second problem.
Consider a carpet protector spray after cleaning. Products like Scotchgard create a barrier that makes future spills easier to blot up before they penetrate.
If you have a licensed and insured Arizona maids team handle your recurring home cleaning, they can spot developing stains during each visit and address them before they become permanent, saving you time, money, and the stress of a DIY deep-clean session.
When to Call a Professional Carpet Cleaner
DIY methods handle most red wine spills well, but some situations call for professional intervention. Consider bringing in a pro if:
The stain is more than a week old and multiple DIY treatments have not removed it.
Your carpet is made of a delicate or natural fiber like wool, silk, or sisal, which can be damaged by standard DIY solutions.
The wine soaked through to the carpet pad, which can cause persistent odor and potential mold growth over time.
You have multiple stains or general carpet soiling that goes beyond a single spot.
Professional carpet cleaners use truck-mounted hot-water extraction systems that flush cleaning agents and pigment all the way through the carpet pile and pad, something no DIY method can replicate. For a home that has seen a season of heavy use, it is worth pairing a carpet cleaning appointment with a broader refresh. Our holiday cleaning service is designed exactly for this: a thorough reset of your entire home after gatherings, guests, and the inevitable spills that come with them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to get an old red wine stain out of a carpet?
Start by re-wetting the dried stain with a small amount of cold water to rehydrate the pigment. Then apply a mixture of one part dish soap and two parts 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes, then blot with a clean white cloth. Repeat the process two or three times if needed. For stains older than a week, an enzyme-based carpet cleaner or professional extraction may be necessary.
What pulls wine out of carpet?
The most effective agents for pulling wine out of carpet are hydrogen peroxide (which oxidizes and breaks down the pigment), dish soap (which carries loosened stain particles away), and absorbent powders like baking soda or salt (which draw liquid out of the fibers before it sets). Commercial carpet stain removers labeled for wine or tannin stains also work well, especially on dried or older spills.
What removes dried red wine stains?
Dried red wine stains respond best to oxidizing agents. A mixture of dish soap and 3% hydrogen peroxide left to dwell for 20 to 30 minutes is the most effective DIY option. Enzyme-based carpet cleaners are another strong choice because they break down organic pigment at a molecular level. Always re-wet the stain with cold water before applying any treatment to reactivate the dried residue.
Does Dawn remove red wine stains?
Yes, Dawn dish soap is effective at removing red wine stains from carpet, especially when combined with white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide. On its own, Dawn dish soap helps emulsify and lift the stain, but it works best as part of a solution rather than applied straight from the bottle. Mix one tablespoon of Dawn with one tablespoon of white vinegar and two cups of warm water, apply to the stain, and blot thoroughly for good results.
